Jesus is My Hero

7 Oct 2000, Pr Raymond Coombe

(Ray is Communication Director for the South Pacific Division of the Seventh-day Adventist Church)

This sermon is based on Colossians 2

Introduction:

It's quite possible that after an event like the Olympic Games we all have our favorite heroes! What is it that makes a hero?  Superior qualities and attributes that we admire. We identify with them. They represent the greatness that we would like to achieve.

Paul tells us in Colossians who our hero really is.  The Colossians were interested in superior knowledge - the "Gnostic" heresy.  But Paul introduces us to God's great "Mystery" - in Jesus Christ. (See 1:26,27; 2:2,3)

All the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are in Him. Christ is the greatest!

How Do We Make Christ our Hero?

Then Paul Gives a Warning - Verse 8.  Beware  that you are not taken captive by:

But Christ is Supreme because He is truly God - Verse 9,10.  There is no greater or higher person. He is the complete, perfect Man, the fullness of divinity.  We are complete in Him. "You have everything when you have Christ" (The Living Bible).

WHY? Paul gives 4 Reasons.

So Christ is SUPREME!

Conclusions.

Then you will shine with your HERO.
