How We Can Know Jesus

Pastor's Piece

by Dr Barry Wright

How can we know Jesus? For many people today this is a question that they battle with all their lives. However, many are able to find the answer early in their spiritual search and when they do find it, the answer is relatively simple.

Once the process is found, the secret is to continue to use and maintain those same basic principles to enable us to fully come to know our wonderful Saviour.

There are four main commitments each person must make in their endeavours to grow close to our Lord.

1. A commitment to Jesus.

'Commit your way to the Lord' (Psalm 37:5, NIV).

Every morning as you wake to a new day, you need to say a simple prayer:

'Lord I am yours today. I commit my life to You and to Your cause. In Jesus name, Amen!'

This is total commitment and it is a daily exercise. In this small prayer you are letting God and the forces of darkness know whose side you are on. Through this prayer you put your life into the hands of Jesus. His way becomes your way, and His will becomes your will.

2. A commitment to prayer.

'Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God' (Philippians 4:6, NIV).

To be able to talk to Jesus, the King of the universe is a very special privilege. He opens His heart to everybody and anybody. If you want to know Jesus, then you need to talk to Him. Each day a special time and place needs to be set-aside for prayer just as Daniel was able to do when he was exiled to Babylon (Daniel 6).

3. A commitment to Bible Study

'The Bereans…received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day…'(Acts 17:11, NIV).

To know Jesus, we must study the Book that tells us about Him. We should commit ourselves to the study of the Scriptures for a period of time each day. As we open the pages, we should find Jesus in every word written there.

We will find that He is the One who loves and heals broken hearts and lives. He is the one who provides a peace that passes all understanding. He is the one who comforts during our times of grief and loss and gives wisdom, courage, and all the strength we need to carry us through each day.

4. A commitment to sharing

Jesus says: 'Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age (Matthew 28:19,20).

When you learn to love Jesus, it becomes impossible not to share Him. He bursts forth into your life like rain from a summer storm cloud. Part of knowing Jesus is sharing Him anytime, anywhere.

Walking with Jesus is the best experience a human being can have. Today, if we are prepared to commit to Jesus, pray to Him, study about Him, and share Him, then we will know Him as our Saviour Lord, and coming King.

The final decision for this commitment lies in our hands.
