Pastor's Piece - There's Nothing My God Cannot Do

When I was a kid I was taught a song about the might and power of God and the message it conveys still means the world to me. It reminds me that I have a God who is "so big, so strong and so mighty"; that there's "nothing my God cannot do".

I was reminded of this song not so long ago when I was reading from the book of Isaiah in the Bible. Isaiah is a great book to read if you want to put life into perspective. It's full of rich promises and reasons why we need never feel afraid, powerless, alone, uncertain . . .

Feeling afraid? Isaiah 51:13-15, "You have forgotten the Lord, your Maker, who stretched out the heavens and laid the foundations of the earth. You fear continually all day long because of the fury of the oppressor, who is bent on destruction. But where is the fury of the oppressor? The oppressed shall speedily be released; they shall not die and go down to the Pit, nor shall they lack bread. For I am the Lord your God, who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar - the Lord of hosts is his name."

Need strength? Isaiah 40:28-31, "Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint."

Feeling alone? Isaiah 43:1-5, "But now thus says the Lord, he who created you . . . he who formed you . . . Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame will not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One, your Saviour . . . you are precious in my sight, and honored, and I love you . . . Do not fear for I am with you."

Need certainty? Isaiah 46:8-11, "Remember this and consider, recall it to mind, you transgressors, remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is no one like me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, 'My purposes shall stand, and I will fulfill my intention, calling a bird of prey from the east, the man for my purpose from a far country. I have spoken, and I will bring it to pass; I have planned, and I will do it."

Each of the promises above are the words of the God of heaven and earth; your God should you so choose. In Isaiah 49:15-16 this God tells us that He will never forsake us; that He can never forget us because we are inscribed on the palms of His hands. "This is how we know what love is," 1 John 3:16 says, "Jesus Christ laid down his life for us . . ."
