Discovering Sin
Text Romans 3:23
Theme Cover-up or Catch-up
Introduction
There are some really incredible stories of how dogs sniff out drugs and other illegal things that criminals try to hide from the authorities.
Take the story of Dox. Dox was a dog assigned to a homicide squad in Italy. Dox eventually uncovered evidence that a suspect who had previously maintained his innocence had actually murdered a man while robbing a jewellery store. The suspect finally confessed.
People do not like getting caught with their hand in the cookie jar. We will do anything to keep from admitting our guilt - denying everything - until overwhelming evidence leaves us no other choice except finally to confess.
If you can count on one thing in this life, it is this: Your sins will always catch up with you. Romans 3:23.
The Bible offers many examples of how our sin always catches up when we try to cover up
- There is the story of David who tried to hide adultery and murder - read 2 Samuel 11.
- Earlier on Achan tried to bury items he had taken contrary to God''d direct command - read Joshua 7.
- Ananias and Sapphira tried to deceive the Holy Spirit in New Testament times - read Acts 5.
Conclusion:
Only Christ can cover up sin - and then only after we have brought it out into the open. Let nothing come between you and a forgiving God. It is better to confess sin and gain Christ than to hide your sin and lose everything.
