What the Bible Says About the Sabbath
a bible study, compiled by John Morris
1. The commandment
Exodus 20:8-11 Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour and do all thy work: but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
2. It started at creation
Genesis 2:1,2 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all the work which he had made.
Genesis 2:3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
3. Why needed
Exodus 20:20 And hallow my sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between me and you, that ye may know that I am the Lord your God
Exodus 31:13 Verily my Sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the Lord that doth sanctify you.
Deuteronomy 5:15 And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the Lord thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the Lord thy God commanded thee to keep the Sabbath day.
Leviticus 23:3 Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation.
4. What did Jesus do on the Sabbath
Luke 4:16 And as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.
Matthew 12;11.12 What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out? How much then is man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days.
John 5:16 Therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things (healed a sick man and send him home) on the sabbath day
John 9:14 And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes
5. When Jesus was in the tomb
Luke 23;51-56 Joseph of Arimatheae went unto Pilate and begged the body of Jesus. And he took it down and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid. And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on.
And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid. And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.
Mark 16:1-2 And when the sabbath was past… very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun.
6. The apostles and the Sabbath
Acts 13:14 They came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the sabbath day.
Acts 13.42 And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath.
Acts 17:1,2 They came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews: and Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures.
Acts 18:3 Because he was of the same craft, he abode with them, and wrought: for by their occupation they were tentmakers. And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks.
7. In heaven and the new earth
Isaiah 66:22-23 For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the Lord, so shall your seed and your name remain. And it shall come to pass that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the Lord.
8. Benefits of the Sabbath
Mark 2:27-28 And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the Sabbath.
Isaiah 58:13-14 If thou turn away from doing thy pleasure on the holy day (the sabbath) of the Lord and call the sabbath a delight and honourable, and honour the Lord by not doing thine own ways, or finding thine own pleasure or speaking thine own words: then thou shalt delight thyself in the Lord.
9. What constitutes the Sabbath
Leviticus 23:32 From even unto even, shall ye celebrate your sabbath
Mark 1:32 And at even, when the sun did set, (ie the sabbath had closed) they brought unto him all that were diseased, and them that were possessed with devils
