Pastor's Piece, by Cheonneth Strickland
One of the expressions you often hear is the phrase 'walk in someone else's shoes.' While I do not like the idea of walking in other people's shoes because of tinea, foot fungus and the like, it is the sentiments behind this expression that is powerful.
'To walk in someone's shoes' is to try to understand what that person in like, makes them tick and the like. To understand someone, you have to know their story. Jesus was great at this. Why? Because he 'heard' their story, which made Him understand them more. Jesus walked in their shoes. He understood where they were coming from. He understood their predicament and this drove His love for them even deeper.
Take the women at the Well of John 4. Jesus understood her story, realised her past, and answered her need for quenching of the soul. It was His understanding of her that made Him love her much.
You and I today, in every relationship and encounter we have another breathing person, whether it be with a checkout person at your local store, husband or wife, work colleague, friend at an association that you are a part of, we are to put ourselves in their shoes. We are to hear their story. This will then enable us to understand them more and to love them like Jesus.
Over this Christmas period, may we take the time to hear people's stories. May 'we walk in their shoes' to get to know them more.
My prayer is that we will practice this until Jesus comes!
